Martial Arts

Kali
Kali is the mother art to many of the arts found in the Philippines. The art of Kali dates back hundreds of years and is heavily influenced by warfare. It is primarily a weapons based art that begins with the study of stick fighting and progresses into edged weapons, flexible weapons and empty hands. The empty hand portion of Kali is derived through the study of weapons. Drills and techniques help to develop proper footwork, angulations, awareness, coordination, and natural attributes. Kali is a warfare art that was designed for “mass attack” situations, and teaches how to use ordinary everyday objects as weapons. It also teaches how to use your environment and heightens personal awareness. The Kali I teach is from Tuhon Dan Inosanto and Guro Jon Rister. Tuhon Inosanto has had several instructors in the Filipino martial arts including many that were WWII veterans and survivors of challenge matches, which often ended in death. Guro Rister’s training and experience in Kali, Wing Chun and Muay Thai has influenced my practice and understanding of Kali.
The subsystems of Kali I train are:
Weapons Subsystems
Double Stick – Single Stick – Stick and Dagger – Double Knife – Single Knife – Staff
Empty Hand Subsystems
Sikaran (kicking art) – Panatukan (boxing art) – Pangumit (standing grappling) Dumog (grappling art)
Jun Fan Gung Fu (Jeet Kuen Do)
Jun Fan Gung Fu (often referred to as Jeet Kune Do) is Bruce Lee’s fighting method that he developed in the 1960’s based on his training in Wing Chun, studies in Western Boxing, Fencing and research into several martial arts to understand the core principles. Jun Fan is a very effective and efficient system of empty hand fighting within the kicking, punching, trapping and grappling ranges. Jun Fan is the core techniques, principles and fighting strategy from which develop our training foundation. My training in Jun Fan Gung Fu is from Sifu (teacher) Dan Inosanto, Sifu Jon Rister and seminar studies with Sifu Larry Hartsell (JFJKD Grappling Association), and Sifu Tim Tackett Sr. (JFJKD).
